DIY (do-it-yourself) Invitations Are Risky Business

Thinking of making your own invitations for your wedding? Learn the pros and cons of DIY invitations… plus download our free comparison guide.

As you may or may not know, our family is also planning a wedding this year. Yes, we’re busy with our lists, like many of you are, trying to get as much done as early as possible. But we’re finding that planning a wedding these days, isn’t the same as it used to me. There are many new trends we “could” follow to cut corners if we wanted to…

Take flowers for instance… we could make our own silk flowers. It would save money, they last forever, and they’d bring back memories each time we pulled them out of that box in the attic. Well, that certainly is an idea, but in our case, we’ve chosen to go the more “traditional” route and have a florist deliver “live” flowers. The look of centerpieces… the feel of the bouquets… and the beautiful fragrance that fills the air. There’s pros and cons to each idea and every bride should decide what’s best for her special day, and what fits her budget best.

But the DIY trends pop up in almost every aspect of planning a wedding, don’t they? If you’re planning a wedding without the aid of a wedding planner, you might be tempted, when you walk through the craft store, to pick up a box of DIY invitations and think to yourself “Hey, I can do that… and it’ll save money”. But what it won’t save you (unless you’re a printshop magician) is extra work and most likely… BIG-TIME FRUSTRATION!!

Here are some things you’ll need to have and/or consider:
- paper or card stock, in various sizes, or you can purchase a kit
- enough ink to complete the project
- proper fonts
- proper wording/verses
- a program to do design and layout of your text
- remember, the printer might jam and ruin a few pieces of your stock
- what if printer blobs ink in spots?
- the color you want – isn’t the color that’s printing
… just to mention a few

After all that work and money, will it be the perfect expression of your special day? Or will your guests immediately see a handmade art project when they open it up? In all reality, this is the biggest day of your life and you won’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Now don’t get me wrong. Some people are very talented and can be extremely crafty with a DIY project like this. If that’s you… go for it! You’ll probably end up with a beautiful piece that you’re proud to show off.

But if that’s not you, think it through. Here’s a flyer you can download that actually compares the DIY cards with professionally printed ones. This flyer compares dollar-to-dollar, why you just might be better off going the professional route. You might even end up spending LESS money.

By using a free, personal invitation assistant like myself, you’ll pay about the same amount either way, yet save yourself a lot of time and frustration (and possibly embarrassment). Don’t you have enough to do already?

So, unless you really know what you’re doing, I suggest you use an expert. Whether you use my invitation assistance, or someone elses, you won’t risk making a bad “first impression”. If you’re in the Central NY area, I provide my albums to brides and grooms to browse in the comfort of their homes. If not, you can always view my selections online at www.creative-assistant.com.
