Postage tips for mailing invitations

Being an invitation dealer, I get asked this question all the time… “How much postage will my invitation need?”

TIP #1
Well, that depends on what type of invitation you decide upon. As most of us know, the current First Class postage rate is 44 cents.  But keep in mind that most wedding invitations weigh more than one ounce once you add all of the enclosure cards into the envelope. A typical wedding invitation consists of the following:

Invitation
Outer Envelope
Inner Envelope
Reception Card
Respond Card
Envelope for Respond Card

Optional items might include:
Accommodations Card
Direction/Map Card

Always plan on putting one invitation completely together and take it to the post office to be weighed. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to put a 44 cent stamp on the respond card envelope that gets mailed back to you. The USPS has a 44 cent stamp with two gold wedding rings, and a 61 cent stamp with a wedding cake.

TIP #2

For budget minded people, we’ve recently seen a rise in Seal-and-Send invitations. These invitations (which you can see here) fold over a few times, and create their own self-envelope. Then you affix a seal to keep them closed. The nice thing about them is that everything is all in one piece, and there’s an area on the back to write your guests’ names and addresses. They only need 44 cents postage to mail out.

Besides that, the respond card that is part of the invitation can be torn off at the perforation and your guest mails it back as a single postcard. You’ll need to place a stamp on this too, but it’s only a postcard stamp which is 28 cents.

TIP #3

Another idea, on the rise, is creating your own stamps with a personalized photo or wording of your choice. They run a little more money, but add a uniqueness that will grab your guests’ attention. Below is a link to create YOUR own personalized stamps. They’re real U.S. postage, and this link will provide you with free shipping.
