Computing On The Go – Netbooks

Well, they’ve been around for about a year now. Those cute little mini laptops that have been given the name “Netbooks”. These little portable devices can fit in your purse or briefcase quite easily. They’re bigger than Smartphones, smaller than the average laptop, yet allow you to get online when you’re away from home or the office.

Netbooks

My son and I both have Dell laptops. He was the first to purchase one, and wanted the biggest and best with all the bells and whistles. It really was a fascinating piece of machinery, but was about 17 inches wide. He preferred it over his desktop because of mobility issues. His wi-fi allowed him to sit outside on his deck in the summertime and get his work done, while being able to watch the kids play too. But it wasn’t until I bought my own Dell laptop, which was only 12 inches in size, that he realized how convenient the smaller size was to carry around the house and from work to home and back.

After traveling around the country to seminars, with laptop in tow, he decided he’d better start looking around for something a little smaller. At the end of last year he started checking out prices, but of course, laptops still had a pretty hefty price tag on them. He happened to run across an ad for a Netbook. A little tiny laptop, only about 7 inches wide. The price said $199, but how could it be anything more than a Tinker Toy?

He thought he’d give it a try so he picked one up. It had a Linux operating system, which he wasn’t too excited about, but soon found that it’s not much different from Windows that he was used too. His netbook was very user-friendly. There’s a word processing program on it, along with a spreadsheet program. He didn’t plan on any major document work or large presentations, so that was fine. Mainly, he wanted to be able to check his email and be able to get online whenever he needed too.

After about 6 months, I’m happy to report, that he (and his family) have really got attached to their little netbook. It goes everywhere. The netbook boots up fast, and has wi-fi installed, so it’s quite easy to get online most anywhere there’s a hotspot. It’s great for the kids too, for a few reasons. The keyboard is very small, and their little hands fit just fine, but should a drink spill in it, or it crashes to the floor, it’s much cheaper to replace than that expensive Dell laptop he originally bought. Since the kids can’t use Daddy’s large laptop, it’s great to have the netbook around so they can get a head start on learning their computer skills.

As we all get more and more attached to our computers, it’s nice to know there’s an inexpensive way to get our information while on the go. Of course, anything new has to get the kinks worked out, but as revisions are made, this will be an ideal starter laptop for any family on a budget. Though not having all the functions that a full-size laptop has, and a much smaller keyboard, for the price, it’s a welcome advancement.
